4.53ct Y-Z, Natural Light Yellow SI2 Cushion Cut Diamond Ring
We literally wait for stones like this to come along- and it's rare. Here's the attributes that "floated my boat":
1) Cut - This is a super well cut cushion diamond.
It is well cut because the shape is super pleasing. It is well cut in a way that produces an even pervasive sparkle - the stone is incredibly bright. One of the best aspects of the cut, and the stone itself is that fact it looks like many a 6 carat stones you will see.
2) Color - It is a stone that almost made Fancy Light Yellow.
This is an important aspect. Remember the difference in actual color from a Y-Z to a Fancy Light Yellow is tiny- but the difference in price is substantial. the cutter actually submitted the diamond to GIA three times attempting them to change the grade- no luck for him- but very lucky for us!
3) Clarity - This one of those perfectly eye clean SI2 diamonds.
There is great misunderstanding about clarity. GIA does not grade based on visibility of imperfection - rather the grade is based on the presence of imperfection. Say a diamond has an SI2 sized black spot dead smack in the middle of the stone. There's a good chance that spot will be visible to the naked eye. However, if that spot is cut into 6 pieces, and placed in unobtrusive areas of the diamond. Now there is not a chance you could find them with the naked eye.
This particular diamond does have one minuscule carbon point- if that were the sole imperfection the stone would likely be a VS1. The balance of imperfection is faint white lines. These lines have no impact on the brilliance of the diamond whatsoever- and none of this is visible to the naked eye- no matter how strong your vision is.
In this super close up you can see one of the faint white lines on the right edge of the diamond at about 3 o'clock.

The black pinpoint is not visible - even in this extreme close up.
Bottom line is that the clarity was another brick in our negotiating wall and allowed an even better price.
If this stone had gotten a grade of Fancy Light Yellow SI2 it would be about another $12,000
If it had been given the grade of Fancy Light Yellow VS1 we would be looking at a price about $16,000 higher.
In fact, it is pretty much identical in appearance to a Fancy light Yellow Internally Flawless diamond.
You have to love taking advantage of grades.

The Ring
The "Uber guys" have performed magic once again with this ring. The massive cushion has indeed picked up a tremendous amount of color - it really sings like a Canary now. Perfect Millgrain. Exquisite pink gold set with Natural Fancy Pink Diamonds - we spare no expense to make the ring a masterpiece.
There is a lovely wire design in tricolor gold underneath the center stone.
It's a lovely design and it does wonders for this stone.
