What we look for in a Vivid Yellow Diamond
We never offer any diamond on this site that we did not carefully inspect. How a diamond looks through the loupe is an important element. But no matter how good it looks magnified, we look at them the way you'd look at anything you might be holding in your hand, 6-18 inches from the eye.
When it comes to a Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond, looks are crucial. While there is a variation on different "D" color diamonds, it's minuscule compared to the difference between fancy colored diamonds of the same color grade.
Plus, when we get to Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds, exactly how vivid a diamond is can make a massive difference in the price.
If we're considering Fancy Intense, Fancy Yellow, or Fancy Light Yellow we sometimes use a 1-10 scale. A Fancy intense '1' is a stone that "just made it". A '10' is a stone that might have gotten Vivid Yellow on a different day.
The 1.25, and 1.14 in the photo below are both lovely diamonds. In terms of color, they're both pretty close to a diamond GIA might grade Fancy Intense Yellow. When considering vivid yellow diamonds the 1-10 scale does not really apply.
The reasons the 1-10 scale don't work are the complexity of this color - and the fact that there's no more vivid grade - it's the ultimate.
Just being darker does not make a Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond the most valuable. Some extremely deeply colored vivid yellows seem to have a less than desirable orange to them. What we look for is purity of color. Canary Lemon Yellow - PURE yellow.
Because of all these possibilities, two diamonds graded Fancy Vivid Yellow can have huge differences in the price.
The price can be much higher because some Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds manage to like even more "canary" yellow than others - you can see it clearly in the photo below - the 1.01 is the stone we're offering here.

We were considering all four diamonds shown above - but so far we've purchased only the 1.01 you can buy here.
It is bright yellow.
GIA graded the diamond SI1. The reason is a tiny feather located deep within the diamond in an area only visible from the bottom of the diamond, using a loupe. It took me about 2 minutes searching with the loupe to find it - normally I'll spot n SI1 in a second. The diamond is totally eye clean
The cut has some very strong points. It transmits the color in a totally even manner. In terms of light performance, it provides a bright appearance from edge to edge - with no large dark areas.
The shape is great as well - with great proportion on bevel and size of the corners.
The only less than stellar aspect is the depth. There is ZERO impact on sparkle and life - but the diamond does not look larger than it's weight.
If it had this color - and it was a "spready" stone (one with a larger spread), it would likely be another 20% in price.
Overall it's a wonderful value in a very strong Fancy Vivid Yellow "Canary" Diamond.

Super Vivid
Just yesterday we were considering these 5 Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds. The stone on the far left is the "super vivid". It's 1.51cts Fancy Vivid Yellow SI2. It was priced 50% more than a second 1.50ct Fancy Vivid Yellow SI1 the cutter had. And it was well worth that difference. Even the lovely 1.01 we're offering shows a fair amount of difference in color. In all fairness - the stone on the left can be considered truly extraordinary in terms of color.
