Most diamond dealers would re-cut this stone to a modern round brilliant- for one reason- they trade for higher prices. Large diamonds, in general are extremely hard to come by lately- and the prices reflect this. Put these two facts together and you'll understand why large stones of older cuts are virtually non existent.

You couldn't pay me enough to re-cut this amazing piece of diamond history. The old mine cut is the father of the Old European Cut. Increased technology in the late eighteenth century allowed diamond cutters to craft stones that were round- as opposed to the Old Mine Cut- which is more akin to a cushion in outline. The facet structure is different than the next step, the modern Round Brilliant Cut Diamond, pioneered by Marcel Tolkowsky in 1919. We guesstimate this stone to be from the early 20th Century.

While the modern cuts are gorgeous- this type of cut has a charm all it's own- and is particularly gorgeous in soft lighting. Sounds pretty romantic to me.

It's in remarkable shape, virtually no abrasion.

AS an L color the diamond shows some warmth in it's color- which really seems to compliment the charming cut. It's a VS2 and totally eye clean.  One aspect to this particular stone that is a huge positive, is it's huge size. Unlike many other old cut stones, this one has a size comparable to a modern stone of the same weight. It's impressive, to say the least

The stone is currently offered loose- however we're plotting a spectacular antique style platinum mount to showcase this beauty.
