How important are GIA polish
Symmetry grades?
Assessing the cut quality is an interesting aspect of judging a diamond.
There are a lot of sites
issuing "cut grades" for fancy shaped diamonds. GIA does not issue grades for
Fancy Shaped diamonds. Although this is not generally known by the public,
dealers do know this. To me, that's kind of misleading.
Shoppers who have looked at
these sites will request "Excellent" or "Ideal" Cut fancy shapes.
We need to discuss these
details each and every time- as we don't want to dive into that pool of sharks
and start grading the cut of our diamonds.
Another fairly common
misconception involves Polish and Symmetry grades. Since GIA does not grade
the overall cut, aren't these indicative?
Yes, and no.
This particular diamond is a
great case study for the times when these grades might eliminate a great
looking stone. GIA grade both Polish and Symmetry "Fair"
There is no way we can
easily identify the reasons for this. In fact, I'll admit , I can't find the
reasons. The stone is symmetrical to the eye. Not can the reason for the
polish downgrade be seen.
When I
first got the stone I did not see the GIA report, although I knew that the
stone had a Fancy Yellow VS2 grade ( IOW, I did not know about Pol//SYM)- I
was floored by the price. When I saw the GIA report- I immediately understood
the low price.
But try as
I might the stone seemed not merely OK, it is really nice for a yellow
emerald cut. The stone broadcasts both the color, and the steps wonderfully.
Likely the
cutter needed to use special methods to achieve the color- the results speak
for themselves.
I
deliberated for a while- either we'd return the stone- or I'd write what
you're now reading. There was never really an option for us to simply throw
away the GIA report.
We have
another 1ct+- Fancy Yellow Emerald Cut with Good Polish and Symmetry, in a
similar ring, and it's $2k more.
So it's a
bargain, and it's drop dead gorgeous in this ring. Dazzling really. And
substantial- large. From outer edge to outer edge, too to bottom, this ring is
11.8mm
Lovely
handmade setting with shaped "claw" prongs- and exceptionally clean micro pave
work.
Of course
only super high color, super well cut round diamonds are used in our rings.
