1.04ct Fancy Light Yellow SI2 Cushion Cut Diamond
Here’s a lovely cushion diamond - including a special aspect that makes it even “softer.”
GIA identifies it as an “Indented Natural”- this is not clarity characteristic, as considered by GIA.
What is a Natural Indented, or just plain Natural?
It’s an area of the “skin” of the rough diamond that is not, or cannot be polished. Sometimes it is a part of the diamond which creates an area where the facet forces the cutter to cut “against the grain”- there are times one miniscule facet can take literally days on the wheel due to this phenomenon. In this case it might be a combination of factors. The area can be seen under magnification, but not easily, if at all, with the naked eye. I can’t see it without the loupe. I can spot it in a few of the photos.
One factor could be yield. When you do examine it, the orientation, and texture are perfect for continuing the lines of the polished diamond. If they polished it, they’d have to take off enough that the entire stone would lose substantial size. So, it might be a tough area due to grain - plus it’s in an area which will be under a prong.
It’s actually quite a beautiful part of the diamond under a microscope - part of the natural skin. It also softens the price of the diamond by a nice percentage. The diamond is a great deal for a Fancy Light Yellow
Neither the Natural, nor the SI2 clarity dims the lovely brilliance of the diamond.
The basis of the SI2 grade are a few spots - each small and positioned in a way that the diamond is totally eye clean. If the cut wasn’t really sweet, we would not have considered the stone.
It’s a lovely shape, and the sparkle extends from one edge to the other. Plus it has a large appearance for its weight.
